3rd International Seminar on Islamic Law in Malaysia and Indonesia: Fostering Legal Harmonization and Collaboration

Kuala Lumpur, 17-19July 2024 - The 3rd International Seminar on Islamic Law in Malaysia and Indonesia successfully took place, bringing together scholars, legal practitioners, and policymakers from both countries. The event, held in Universiti of Malaya Kuala Lumpur, aimed to foster collaboration and harmonization of Islamic legal practices between the Fakultas Syari'ah dan Hukum UIN Sunan Kalijaga and Akademi Pengajian Islam Universiti of Malaya.

This year’s "Strengthening Islamic Legal Systems: Harmonization and Innovation" seminarhighlighted the growing need for a cohesive approach to Islamic law amidst evolving socio-economic landscapes. Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on various aspects of Islamic jurisprudence, family law, commercial transactions, and criminal justice, reflecting on Malaysia and Indonesia's shared heritage and unique challenges.

One of the seminar's significant outcomes was the proposal for a joint research initiative between Malaysian and Indonesian universities. This initiative aims to develop a comparative study on the application of Islamic law in both countries, identifying best practices and areas for improvement. Additionally, participants called for the establishment of a bilateral committee to oversee the harmonization efforts and facilitate ongoing cooperation.

The 3rd International Seminar on Islamic Law in Malaysia and Indonesia marked a significant step towards harmonizing legal practices and enhancing collaboration between the two nations. As participants return to their respective fields, the knowledge and insights gained from this seminar are expected to contribute to the development of more robust and cohesive Islamic legal systems in both countries.
